a SUPER cultural fact...

As I write, a certain annual American event is taking place. Matter of fact, you have probably been hearing about it for weeks now on the news. Something like...
You better buy your ¨Super ____¨ snacks for your ¨Super ______¨ party on ¨Super _____ Sunday, and don´t miss the new ¨Super ______¨ commercials.
Of course the event I am typing about is the Super Bowl. You know...the NFL World Championship.

As an American, I enjoy American football.
-I cheer for the Vikings, since I am from Minnesota.
-I´ll even cheer for the Bears, since they are in the NFC North Division.
-I even emailed my wife to make sure she tapes the game for me. I have been reminding her to get the right channel and the right starting and ending time of the game. (Men...do you agree that this can easily be messed up?)
-I know that this might be impossible, but I am going to try to make it to my house on Tuesday morning without knowing the score and outcome of the game (and don´t any of you get the hairbrained idea to email me the score or put it in a comment on the blog...I will never forgive you) =)

Ok...here is the Super cultural fact.

I have been in Chile for one month, and I have not seen or heard one news story concerning this ¨so called¨ BIG game. The sports stories Chileans are talking about these days are the under-20 Chilean soccer team, the Chilean tennis star who just got runner up in the Australian Open (clay court), and the in-country soccer club championship starting this week.

No American football.
Nothing about Manning finally shaking his playoff monkeys off his back.
Nothing about the Bears Cinderella story.
Nothing about the Colt´s comeback over the Patriots two weeks ago.
Nothing about the side story about the first ever meeting between two Afro-American head coaches in the final game.
Nothing.

So what is the moral of the story?

Football to Chileans is FIFA, not the NFL.
Football Champions of the World only come around every 4 years (World Cup).
Football is the only global sport.

If we Americans think otherwise...we are sadly mistaken.
