The
"Shopping @ Series" has been resurrected with plans for at least two more posts...
Today allow us to give you the experience at shopping @
El Majorista. El Majorista literally means "
the biggest" or "
the biggest one".

If you remember from some
past "Shopping @"
posts, most Chileans shop on a daily basis and usually buy in smaller quantities. Well, there are always
exceptions...and shopping @ El Majorista is one of those exceptions.

El Majorista would be similar to Sam's Club, Costco, or BJ's. Products are sold in
larger quantities (by the box, by the case, or multi item packaging).

We shop there with our co-workers at least once a month in order to
split items in half and save money.
For example: a case of toilet paper, napkins, or bottles of juice.

Chileans who own restaurants or small businesses shop @ El Majorista due to
the cheaper prices per unit.
Above: Large bags of flour.
Above: Other items that we split with our co-workers would include: rice, sugar, or spaghetti noodles.

El Majorista is
a busy place, especially during the later afternoons. Parking spots are limited and shopping carts can run out.

Once at the register, we were reminded of several things that we are still adjusting to in Chile. Most of the items on the register counter are not ours, nor the man in front of us. They are items from previous customers that they didn't want at the last minute, or they are items that the store is trying to sell (like the Vizzio candies in the white boxes). The counter is a complete mess and it sure doesn't help getting through the checkout quickly...buy hey, welcome to Chile,
where quickness is not king!In the next Shopping @ post, we plan to show you the Temuco Mercado.
